Items accepted at the Powhatan Convenience Center for recycling include:

Newspapers and inserts: Newspapers should NOT be bound with string or placed in plastic bags. Newspapers can be placed in brown paper bags.

Mixed paper: Junk mail, magazines, computer paper, corrugated boxes and cereal/dry food boxes. (Please, no plastic bags, foil-backed paper, wax or plastic coated paper, food contaminated paper or carbon paper.)

Plastic bottles and other "narrow neck" bottles with a 1 or 2: Plastic soda bottles, milk and juice jugs, and shampoo and detergent bottles
(To save room in the bins, please removed lids and flatten all bottles. NO plastic bags).

Metal cans and foil products: Aluminum and bi-metal beverage cans, "tin" or steel food cans, aluminum foil products
(You do not need to remove labels, but please rinse all containers).

Glass bottles and jars: Clear, green and brown bottles or jars from food or mirrors, broken glass, ceramics, ovenware or glass products other than bottles and jars

Metal: There is a fee of $20.00 to remove freon from refrigerators, freezers or any item that now has or has had freon in it. There is a $15.00 fee to dispose of stoves, washing machines and water heaters.

Please, no large auto parts or any type of fuel tanks unless cut in half. Antifreeze, paint, oil, and oil filters may be recycled at no charge. Corrugated cardboard boxes may be recycled at no charge; please remove all plastic and trash, break boxes down and place in front of cardboard bailer. Propane tanks, auto batteries, cell phones and rechargeable batteries are recycled at no charge. Tires are accepted for a fee.

Hours of operation for the convenience center are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week. They can be reached at 598-5673. The convenience center is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve at 12:00 P.M. and Christmas Day.
