Program

The Powhatan Leadership Institute program consists of thirteen sessions and a Recognition Dinner.  Most meetings will be held Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9:15 P.M. at various locations throughout the county.  Class orientation and Board of Supervisors dinner will be on other days of the week.  A visit to the General Assembly will be a day trip. Registration fee is $60.  A maximum of 30 Powhatan County non-elected residents will be chosen on a first come basis to participate.  Participants are expected to attend as many sessions as possible.  Missing more than 3 sessions will jeopardize successful completion of the course.  Applicants will be chosen on a first come basis beginning December 3, 2007 at the Powhatan Extension Office.  This years program will begin on January 12, 2008.

Purpose

Good and effective leadership is not limited to those in positions of authority, nor is it limited to any one race, culture or economic status.  The Institute’s intention is to reap the benefits of the varied backgrounds of the citizens of Powhatan.  This Leadership Institute is a partnership between local government and various organizations throughout the county. 

1. Identify potential leaders throughout the county.

2. Help to cultivate the leadership skills of citizens.

3. Encourage potential leaders to take a more active role in the county.

4. Educate participants about the opportunities and problems in Powhatan.

5. Provide a forum for current and potential leaders to meet and discuss issues.

6. Develop a spirit of cooperation to benefit the county as a whole.

7.   Acquaint citizens with day to day operations of county government.

Mission Statement

The Leadership Institute informs, educates and enlightens interested citizens about   issues facing the county to foster citizen  involvement in making Powhatan an even more desirable place to live, work and enjoy life.

Goal

To develop on an annual basis, a group of county citizens motivated to participate in current and future county activities.

Objectives

· Encourage program participants from all areas of the county to get involved in community activities and to develop leadership skills.

· Expand citizen leadership potential by increasing knowledge of Powhatan County and the critical issues facing its citizens.

· Encourage citizen involvement between program members and current community and local government leaders.

· Recognize those citizens who have an interest in helping the county develop its vision to become a desirable place to live, work and enjoy life.

 

Graduates will:

· Become better citizens

· Learn county geography, culture and history

· Find volunteer work

· Network with other citizens

· Build friendships

· Develop a sense of place

· Better appreciate community

· Build political process knowledge
