Powhatan County Director of Elections
Karen Alexander was born and raised in Powhatan County and was a proud graduate of Powhatan High School’s Class of 1996. Karen went on to achieve a dual degree in Psychology and Human Services from Virginia Tech. Immediately following, Karen received a Master of Social Work degree from VCU with a specialization in Business Administration for Nonprofits. She left the world of non-profit administration to do fundraising for local government. Karen is a graduate of the PLI Class of 2010.
Karen served as the Powhatan County’s first Grants Coordinator for four years. She moved into the position of General Registrar in June 2012 when Inez Poe retired after 40 years of service as Registrar. Karen received her official VREO Certification in April 2015. Her title changed to Director of Elections in 2016 when her duties and responsibilities evolved due to statewide legislation. She has now been serving in this role for a total of four and a half years alongside one part-time Deputy Registrar, Jamie Swemba, who is an indispensable asset to their department.
Karen also serves as the Parent Representative on Powhatan’s Comprehensive Service’s Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT). She is also an active member of the Education Committee for the Voter Registrar’s Association of Virginia.
