Animal Control

Powhatan Animal Control is a division of the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office.

The division consists of 3 animal control officers and 1 animal control assistant full time, and 2 part time kennel assistants.

Facility
The facility was built in 2002 and can house up to 16 dogs and 12 cats. We also have an additional room for pregnant or nursing animals and a small pen for limited livestock including horses, goats, sheep, and others.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate information regarding lost or found animals
  • Primary enforcement of Virginia animal control laws and related Powhatan County ordinances; can enforce all Virginia criminal and traffic laws
  • Provide loving, compassionate care for all the animals that enter our facility
  • Respond to citizen requests regarding animal related problems
  • Work to find appropriate homes for our animals through adoption and rescue
Things We Do Not Do
  • Pick up dead animals in the roadway; if the dead animal is a traffic hazard, contact Sheriff's Office Dispatch at 804-598-5656
  • Pick up or deal with any wildlife; for wildlife related questions contact the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries at 804-367-1000

  • Pick up cats, unless injured with no known owner, as they are considered free roaming in Powhatan County
