KAREN ALEXANDER
Powhatan County Director of Elections
Karen Alexander was born and raised in Powhatan County and was a proud graduate of Powhatan High School. Karen went on to achieve dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Human Services from Virginia Tech. Immediately following, Karen received a Master of Social Work degree from VCU with a specialization in Business Administration for Nonprofits. She left the world of non-profit administration and took her development experience to do fundraising for local government.
Karen served as the Powhatan County’s first Grants Coordinator for four years. She moved into the position of General Registrar in June 2012 when Inez Poe retired after 40 years of service as Registrar. Karen received her official Virginia Registered Election Official Certification in April 2015. Her title changed to Director of Elections in 2016 when her duties and responsibilities evolved significantly due to statewide legislation.
Karen is a graduate of the Powhatan Leadership Institute’s Class of 2010. Karen has also served as the Parent Representative on Powhatan’s Comprehensive Service’s Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT). Karen is also an active member of many committees within the Voter Registrar’s Association of Virginia (VRAV) and also serves as an Annual Meeting presenter for VRAV. Karen is a proud, active member of Passion Community Church (PCC) where she serves as the Dream Team’s Information Center Coordinator for their Powhatan Campus. Karen lives in Powhatan County with her husband, their two sons, and their beloved pug, Sophie.
