These groups offer guidance, expertise, and support across many areas of community life—from environmental stewardship and economic development to social services and public safety. Boards & Commissions Overview

Anti-Litter Council

The Anti-Litter Council works to maintain Powhatan as a clean, litter-free community, promoting environmental responsibility and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Agricultural & Forestal Advisory Committee

This committee advises on farming, forestry, and land use, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices that support Powhatan's rural character.

Board of Equalization

This board ensures fairness in real estate assessments, addressing complaints and ensuring equality for property owners.

Board of Zoning Appeals

A critical group for managing zoning decisions, hearing appeals, and enforcing zoning ordinances to ensure orderly community development.

Capital Area Agency on Aging

Dedicated to improving the lives of older adults, this agency advocates for senior needs and services in the Powhatan area.

Community Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC)

This committee provides feedback on transportation planning, working with regional agencies to improve public transportation services.

Community Policy & Management Team (CPMT)

Focuses on at-risk youth and families, this team implements programs under the Virginia Comprehensive Services Act to improve the lives of those in need.

Community Action Agency Advisory Board

Comprehensive Plan Update Citizens Working Group

This citizens working group provides feedback to the Board of Supervisors on necessary updates to the 2021 Comprehensive Plan that reflect the goals of the 2024-2029 Board of Supervisors Strategic Plan.  

Economic Development Authority

The authority works to enhance Powhatan’s economy by supporting new development projects and fostering existing businesses.

Electoral Board

This board oversees election processes, ensuring fairness and transparency in local elections.

Extension Leadership Council

Evaluate current Extension programs to determine which should continue, be modified, or discontinued based on community needs, while identifying potential collaborators to avoid duplication.

Goochland Powhatan Community Services Board


J.Sergeant Reynolds Community College Board

The College Board is responsible for identifying educational needs, engaging community support, and ensuring the college responds to regional needs within state guidelines.

James River Advisory Council

John Tyler Alcohol Safety Action Program (JTASAP)

Library Board of Trustees

Responsible for shaping policies to ensure library services meet the needs of Powhatan’s residents, the Library Board works to promote literacy and public access to information.

Local Board of Building Code Appeals (LBBCA) & Board of Fire Prevention Code Appeals (BFPCA)

Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC)

In compliance with federal law, receive and manage hazardous materials inventory reports, support public access to safety information, and assist in developing and maintaining the county’s emergency response plans for hazardous materials. Additionally, support training, public education, emergency exercises, disaster recovery, and terrorism response efforts as requested by county officials.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission

Piedmont Court Services/Criminal Justice Board

Support the courts in managing offenders through evidence-based practices that promote accountability and reduce recidivism. Enhance public safety by fostering community partnerships that encourage lawful, productive lifestyles and reduce crime.

Planning Commission

Social Services Board

Deliver solution-focused, competency-based services that enhance quality of life through benefit programs, protective services, and support for client independence. 

Waste Management Board of Directors

Helps member localities meet Virginia’s recycling requirements and may manage waste collection, transfer, and disposal services. Its operations are governed by a Board of Directors appointed by each member jurisdiction.
